“Let go and let God.” We’ve all heard someone say this or maybe we’ve said it ourselves. Normally, this phrase is uttered to encourage those in turbulent times. While these words are powerful and true, people who have yet to learn how to trust God will probably view it as just another religious cliché. So what does it really mean to trust Him?
It’s actually pretty simple; to trust God is to know He
loves you, He has the power to help you, and He’ll never leave you. Sometimes it’s easier to be an unbelieving, believer. We’ll trust our friends, our
mislead thought process, our old habits, what media tells us, and what our
parents tell us, more than we trust in what God tells us. Think of all the wasted years living in turmoil being upset about situations you couldn’t do
anything about. How you’ve experienced feelings of guilt and constantly condemning
yourself, and for what?! I swore – condemn yourself, I had an “impure” thought –
condemn yourself, I gossiped – condemn yourself…That’s not what God wants for you,
that’s what man has lead you to believe about religion. Now everything you do is wrong and you can't live up to the impossible self-righteous standards that have covered up true faith. And as you’re continuing
to live this life without peace or joy, He’s patiently waiting for you to simply trust in Him.
Make no mistake, life can be difficult, believer or not; and
while some people face breakdowns with courage and come out stronger on the
other side, others seem unable to recover from their fall. The only difference
is the one who thrived in spite of it, is the one who had true faith in God. They
trusted Him to get through the difficult season. They took their issues up
before taking them out. Learning to
trust God means that you can take the burden off yourself and give it to Him
completely.
Through this process, we must also understand that life
won’t always go our way. Sometimes bad things happen, sometimes we don’t get
what we want, but what we want, might
not be good for us. So instead of blaming Him, we should be thankful and
understand that He has a plan for our life.
The better you know Him, the easier it will be to trust that.
Think about it—do you trust anyone you don’t know? The fact is, the better you
know someone, the more you tend to trust him or her. That trust grows by
spending time with that person. Likewise, we learn to trust Him the same way.
Praying and reading His Word are just a couple ways to do that. And God
has made it easy for us. He’s designed it in such a way that those who approach
Him with an open heart and mind “get it.” But if you try to approach your
relationship from a proud and “enlightened” perspective, you’ll likely misunderstand
Him completely.
Proverbs 3:5 tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your
heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” When we put our problems in God's hands, He puts His peace in our hearts. Just let go... He's got you!
